About FM Otsu English Hour
What is FM Otsu English Hour?
Welcome to FM Otsu English Hour. I’m Junichi Yahata and, I am Keiko Burkholder.
This program is brought to listeners who love music not necessarily but especially in English with the key phrase in the language.
We’ve just begun to run this program and we are planning to include topics in our nearest surroundings in English.
For instance;
Our beautiful mother lake Biwako,
Her environment with sustainable development goals,
Her lovely lakeshore towns including our fantastic Otsu,
and their historical articles will be included in the future.

FMおおつイングリッシュアワーへようこそ。私は谷畑淳一、私はバークホルダー啓子です。
このプログラムは、英語に限らず音楽を愛する方に、英語のキーフレーズとともにお届けするものです。
まさに始まったばかりの番組で、今後、身近な話題を英語でお届けすることを計画しています。
例えば；

（Ａ２）The Song of the Day is a song selected for the day by the program staff. It is mostly one of the Pop songs widely known by English speaking people around the world. It includes the Key Phrase in its lyrics. The program navigators will refer and talk about the lyrics and their Japanese translation, which may be included the navigators’ viewpoints or opinions. We believe that English phrases including the Key Phrases are well remembered when we hear them with the melody in the song we listen to. Enjoy the song with the lyrics and the chat on them.

（Ｑ３）What will be the topics on Biwako and its environment?
（Ａ３）In the future, we will include topics around our beautiful mother lake Biwako, her environment with sustainable development goals, her lovely lakeshore towns including our fantastic Otsu, and their historical articles.
We will try to bring opportunities to think of Biwako in English.
For instance, Yoshi or reed is one of the tremendous amounts of Biwako inhabitants that keep the lake alive. Yoshi or reed provides rich residential space for microbiota, bacteria, small insects and other living beings that are working together to maintain the environment.
As for the Sustainable Development Goals, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan described Otsu and Omihachiman as advanced cases in their report.
It reads as follows;
… on June 1, 2017, Shiga Prefecture, the city of Otsu and the Shiga Business Federation co-hosted a symposium, which was attended by Mr Thomas Gass, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, as well as various government officials and experts in order to inform citizens of the importance of the SDGs.
… Another example is the city of Omihachiman in Shiga prefecture. It established a city-level SDGs promotion headquarters in February 2017, which is taking initiatives in getting local communities and groups of young people involved.

（Ｑ４）What will be the topics on disaster prevention?
（Ａ４）In the future, we will talk as well about topics on how to be prepared for undesirable but inevitable disasters. Nobody wants to experience earthquakes, floods, storms, fires or heatwaves. But, they are not happening somewhere else in the world and we cannot avoid any of them someday. Some say that it is you to protect yourself, or it is expertise needed to mitigate the damage. What we will try to share with listeners are;
what is deployed as of today to face them,
the expertise from the experts,
listeners experiences or ideas,
and articles in our history.
When we talk about a disaster, we need to think of help and support from people all around the world. Please take a look at some further references as follows;
Taiwan sent more than 20 billion yen in donations to disaster-hit areas following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Japanese students and residents visited Taipei to express gratitude to people in Taiwan.
In 1985 during the Iran-Iraq War, Turkey rescued Japanese citizens in Teheran by their aeroplane prior to its own citizens. It is said that this is their gratitude in return to Japanese people’s effort to rescue Turkish ship the Ertugrul at Kushimoto, Wakayama in 1890.

災害について考えるとき、世界の人々からの援助と支援を受けてきていることを忘れるわけにはいきません。以下を参考にしてください。
2011年の東日本大震災後、台湾は被災地への寄付金として200億円以上を寄付しました。日本の学生と住民が台北を訪問し、台湾の人々に感謝の意を表しました。
1985年、イラン – イラク戦争の間、トルコはテヘランの日本人を自国の市民よりも先に飛行機で救出しました。 これは、1890年（明治23年）に和歌山県串本でトルコ船Ertugrulを救助した日本人に対するトルコ政府の感謝であると言われています。

（Ａ５）Who we would like to ask to listen to this program is not only conventional residents but also those who live here as the second home together with us.
Everybody has the background, the history, the family and the language to communicate. Though we want to talk in the original language ideally, it is unrealistic. We assume English could be the possible universal language to communicate.
Not only in the case of disasters but also in day-to-day life, why don’t we try to have good communications with each other even if the language differs from each other a little bit?
