歌詞は、私のティーンエージャー時代の実体験「愛の嘆き（love lament）」をもとにして書いた。

It was a true story. Totally simple love lament. There was this girl I was in love with, beautiful goth chick from the late seventies, dark black hair — everything was black — and pale white vampire skin. She would read poetry to me in her father’s car, parked in the back of the house, with no wheels, and weeds growing up in between it. How can you not fall in love with that? This girl had a lot of boyfriends who treated her like shit. I wanted to be the knight in shining armor, wanted to be with her. She wasn’t having it. It never came to play. True story, though, a simple little love song. ‘Waiting on a line of greens and blues…’ I had a mood ring when I was a kid. I threw that in to be quirky.

■ その「彼女は」2つ年上との説も
マーティンは高校2年の時、姉の友人（4年生）と友達でした。 その「彼女」は車で彼と通学し、自らの出来事を話す間柄でした。マーティンは彼女にとても熱心でしたが、2年生とと一緒に出かけることは決してない、と知っていたので最後まで打ち明けられませんでした。
“To Be with You” is about a man who has his eye on a woman who recently experienced a broken heart from a previous relationship. When Martin was a sophomore in high school, he was friends with his older sister’s friend (who was a senior). She would give him rides to school and tell him about all the boy problems she had. Martin had a huge crush on her, but didn’t tell her since he knew a senior would never go out with a sophomore. Martin wrote this song about her.

「日本でビッグになる」との評価を受けるバンドの草分け。
Mr. Big is frequently cited as an example of the “Big in Japan” phenomenon, where a musical act is disproportionately more popular in Japan compared to similar groups. Some consider Mr. Big as one-hit wonder for “To Be with You,” but they maintained consistent popularity in the Japanese market for years.
Formation and debut album (1988–1990)
By 1989, they signed with Atlantic Records and released their self-titled debut the same year. The record did not gain the band a mainstream rock audience stateside, but was a success in Japan.
Breakthrough and height of fame (1991–1998)
In 1993, another ballad, a cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” (from their third album, Bump Ahead), peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.[7] Although it is said that the band also contributed music to the soundtrack for the Sega Mega-CD release of The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, the songs actually featured Eric Martin with musicians hired by Sega.
Line-up change and break-up (1999–2002)
Mr. Big performed a twenty-date tour of Japan, followed by a New Year’s Eve 1999 show with Aerosmith at the Osaka Dome, in Osaka. Get Over It was released in the US in March 2000, followed by a short club stint at “Roxy”, California.
Reunion and new album (2009–2013)
On February 1, 2009, a radio announcement for 酒井康 “Koh Sakai’s Burrn Presents: Heavy Metal Syndicate” contained a short message from Mr. Big, announcing the reunion of the original Mr. Big line-up to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their debut album. A press conference in Japan in February generated much excitement, and a tour of the country starting in June was announced, with shows in ten locations (including the Budokan).

父親が軍人であったため、台湾、ワシントン、カンサスと移り住み、多感な少年期はヨーロッパで過ごした。イタリアに住んでいた頃にロックに触れ、ドラマー、またシンガーとしてカバー・バンド活動をしていた。ジャズ・ドラマーだった父の影響で、10代の頃はドラムをプレイしていた。ある日、バンドのシンガーよりも上手く歌える気がして歌ってみたところ、好評だったことからシンガーに転向したという。初めて観に行ったコンサートはアメリカ。2度目はクイーン。
父親は Frederick Lee “Pepper” Martin で、バンド”The Buzz”のドラマーで、セルジオメンデスの前座で演奏の経験も。
Eric is the son of Frederick Lee “Pepper” Martin and Iris Martin. He has three younger siblings Dan, Joan and Laurie; and is half-Irish, half-Italian.
Musically, Eric Martin was first influenced by his father, Frederick Lee “Pepper” Martin. Pepper Martin had a gig as drummer for the band “The Buzz”. This first gig would actually be an opener for Sérgio Mendes, a renowned jazz/ bossa nova artist in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

Martin had decided to live independently by the age of 18. His first job was selling ice-cream. The big break he needed came when John Nymann, guitarist for the band “Mile Hi”, gave him a call and asked if he would want to form a new band together.

■ 日本とのつながり
1998 – age 38 (Eric Martin)
The CD, Martin’s third solo album, Somewhere in the Middle, was completed in 1998 and released in Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Strong Japanese sales prompted a 1998 tour.
1998年には、11年ぶりのソロ名義アルバム『SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE』を発表。同年秋に、かつてERIC MARTIN BANDで共に活動していたドラマー、トロイ・ルケッタ（現TESLA）を含むバンドを率いて初の単独来日公演を行った。また日本テレビ『THE 夜もヒッパレ！』に出演し、GLAYの「誘惑」をほぼ完璧な日本語で歌った。
2002 – age 42 (Eric Martin)
2002年、Mr. Big解散直後にソロ・アルバム『I’M GOIN’ SANE』をポニーキャニオンから発表。日本のライターによって書かれた「Fly」がアサヒスーパードライのCMに起用され、日本のお茶の間に流れた。本作に伴う小規模の日本ツアーも行われた。
2003 – age 43 (Eric Martin)
In 2003, Martin contributed his version of “Cheer Up” to the Japanese release Sincerely 2 – 竹内まりや Mariya Takeuchi Song Book album.
2003年、当時17歳のギター少年クリス・ウィルソンや、HAREM SCAREMのハリー・ヘス、NIGHT RANGER（当時）のジェフ・ワトソンをゲストに迎えたソロ・アルバム『DESTROY ALL MONSTERS』を発表。ポニーキャニオンからの作品発表は、本作が最後となった。
2004 – age 44 (Eric Martin)
2004年、B’zのギタリスト、松本孝弘のTMG（Tak Matsumoto Group）にボーカルとして参加し、サマーソニック出演や日本武道館公演を含む、約一ヶ月に渡る日本ツアーが行われた。この時の日本武道館公演が、DVD『DODGE THE BULLET』として発売されている。
2009 – age 49 (Eric Martin)
2009年3月のライブで、絢香と彼女のデビュー曲「I Believe」をデュエットした。この時の映像は日本のニュース番組や音楽番組等で一部公開されたが、のちに発売されたDVDには収録されなかった。DVDの初回盤特典である同ライブのCDにも収録されていない。その理由は、絢香の事務所（研音）から収録しないで欲しい旨の要請があった（許可が下りなかった）ため。
2009年にはMr. Bigがオリジナル・メンバーで再結成し、東京のハードロックカフェで記者会見を行った。同年6月5日の札幌公演を皮切りに、オリジナルMr. Bigとしては1996年以来となる日本ツアーが行われた。with shows in ten locations (including the Budokan).
2015 – age 55 (Eric Martin)
2015年7月には、ボックスCDプロモーションを兼ねて日本では初めてのアコースティック・ソロ・ツアーが行われた[5]。そのために6月の下旬に来日したが成田空港でファンからのサイン攻めにあっているところをテレビ東京の『YOUは何しに日本へ』の取材を受けた。「歌ってください」という取材陣の要望に応じ、ファンらのコーラスとともに「To Be With You」のさわりを歌って見せた。
2017 – age 57 (Eric Martin)
2017年、Eric Martin USA Pop Brigadeを率いて来日公演を開催。
